Hungary: West Ham United and Wolves loanees finish season in second
Posted by gavstone on June 1, 2009
It was a disjointed end to the season for FC Ujpest in Hungary, but the 2nd place finish means that Scott Malone, Tony Stokes and company will be competing in the Europa League next season. The likelihood is that neither will be at the club next season though, as their loan spells have now finished and they return to West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers respectively. Results in the last few matches of the season were disappointing for Ujpest, which played into the hands of Debrecen, who walked away with the title. 2nd was never really in doubt though.
Things started off well for them though a fortnight ago with a 2-1 win over FC Zalaegerszeg at home. Both Stokes and Malone came on as substitutes in that match, with Stokes going close to scoring soon after coming on. Any hopes of winning the title evaporated the following week though following a 4-3 loss away to Gyor ETO. Stokes entered the match in the 30th minute with his side already 2-1 up, following an injury to a teammate. By all accounts it was a decent match for the West Ham loanee, despite picking up a second half yellow card. A last day loss to FC Fehervar (1-2) saw both Stokes and Malone start, with the West Ham coming off on the hour mark to a rapturous reception, despite being at fault for the second goal. Malone had a steady game at right-back.
Success has come easy for Ferencvaros though, who have already been crowned champions of NB II and won promotion back to the top flight weeks ago. Following a 3-2 win away to Baktalorathaza last weekend, Bobby Davison’s side have now won 16 games in a row and are 17 points clear with two matches remaining. The win over Baktalorathaza saw only Paul Shaw turn out for the team, with the other English players rested. The former Gillingham and Millwall man had little effect on a game that proved to be a run-of-the-mill win, despite the close scoreline. Before this, a 5-0 home win over Kazincbarika saw Shaw play the first half and come off at the break, without getting on the score sheet. It has been a quiet week for the rest of the English players, although there maybe some call-ups for the game this evening against. Debrecen II.
